Service Learning
Welcome to the Service Learning program! We are so excited to have our teachers integrating Service Learning into the curriculum at Canyon Rim Academy.
What is Service Learning? Service-learning is a teaching method that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools and communities. Young people apply academic skills to solving real-world issues, linking established learning objectives with genuine needs. They lead the process, with adults as partners, applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to concerns such as hunger, pollution, and diversity.
"Service-learning is education in action." — Sen. John Glenn
Every classroom at Canyon Rim Academy will have a Service Learning volunteer to help the teacher integrate service learning projects with their particular grade’s curriculum. We are only a few months into school and have already seen some amazing projects come together. Each month we will highlight some of these projects here on the website. If you are interested in assisting us with this program please contact the Service Learning Coordinator, Marianne Griffiths at mariannegriffiths@yahoo.com.

CRA's service learning program for 2009-2010 is underway! Each grade will have three service learning opportunities and there will be school-wide projects as well. These photos show fifth graders in Mrs. Romney's class. A representative from Primary Children's Medical Center came to CRA to teach the children about the services provided at PCMC and to explain their need for warm quilts for their patients. The kids helped to gather materials and then the big day came for tying! It was quite an undertaking that involved sewing machines in the hallway, lots of material, many skeins of yarn and 75 needles. It came together beautifully and as you can see by their faces, the kids absolutely loved tying the quilts. Many groups tied more than one. The quilts were delivered to PCMC where they will help provide warmth to a child in need. Thank you to all those who helped make this project successful and to all who provide service at CRA!
